Hotel Mario notably offers a refreshing change of pace with its gameplay. RELATED: Call of Cthulu Is THE Definitive Lovecraft Video Game Though hampered slightly by hardware limits and the CD-i's typically poor controllers, the games themselves play rather well, with graphics that invoke SNES or Genesis games. Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon feature familiar, side-scrolling gameplay with platforming through different levels, plenty of projectiles and weapons and a handful of boss encounters. Gameplay-wise, the games hold up better than most Internet reviewers would lead you to believe. Honestly, it works in its favor more than you might suspect, given the modern reaction to these games. The games also do have excellent voice acting. This game, along with Wand of Gamelon, also gave us something that isn't too common, even today: both games feature Zelda as the protagonist, working to save Link instead of being relegated yet again to damsel in distress. Zelda's Adventure differs from the other three games when it comes to the animation, ditching it in favor of rather early live-action cutscenes. Attempting to produce something with an animation quality on par with televised cartoons at the time was an ambitious step. Still, for what the games were attempting, the expressiveness and animation are rather impressive when you consider that most games at the time were going for "blast processing" and Mode 7. They're a very cartoony, early animation sort of affair. Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Hotel Mario all feature animation from Russian studio Animation Magic. The first thing most people talk about is the animation quality.
